Sugarhouse

Ever since its first humble cake shop opened its doors to the public in 1983, Sugarhouse has continued to championed a fine tradition of good taste in cakes, pastries, and other delectable dishes.

Through word of mouth, Sugarhouse's popularity swiftly grew and more outlets were soon opened. People simply could not stop talking about Sugarhouse's Blueberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Truffle, Almond Sansrival, and the ever popular French Apple Pie! Cakes and pies soon expanded to a wide selection of cookies, breads and other pastries. Finally soups, salads, sandwiches, and other real meals were added to the Sugarhouse menu.

The Sugarhouse legacy that has continued to expand goes to show that there has never been a better time to come home to good taste.

But it's yummy so it was satisfying!

This cake is just what I craved for. It's surprisingly light and fluffy and just the right amount of sweetness for me. I think we finished this cake in one sitting because one slice is literally not enough since it's so light. But it's yummy so it was satisfying!

Now ensconced in a creamy chocolate coating, Sugarhouse’s Chocolate Truffle cake flaunts one of the best-tasting icing in town. It’s distinctly milkier than your average chocolate cake’s, plus it has that smooth chocolate flavor that can easily remind you of a praline. Be warned—the cake’s light, almost sponge-like consistency can trick you into finishing off that whole serving without you knowing it.

Sugarhouse's Concorde is not at all covered by icing. It's covered with "Barquillos" looking sticks, with uneven length, both on the side and on top of the cake. A thin, clear plastic is wrapped around the cake to ensure that the sticks are in place. Tasting the sticks will actually reveal what they are made of. Not your usual "Borquillos", these sticks are actually mirengue - plainly made of sugar. The cake inside the army of stick mirengues is chiffon. Not chocolate, just plain vanilla. It's soft and moist and not at all sweet. The stick mirengues actually give the cake its sweetness. To add a little more beauty to this unusual piece, it is finished off with dashes of powdered sugar all over. Next time you'll pass by Sugarhouse, try this cake.

Food Fanatic

I bought a cashew toffee cake from Sugarhouse. Thankfully, it comes in a baby size - good for a single serving. Once I dug into it, I fell instantly in love. The contrast in textures - soft chocolate chiffon against the crunchy toffee bits - works wonderfully on the palate. It may seem simple enough, but there is a burst of different flavors in every forkful: buttery, chocolate-y, nutty - it's just splendid! Sugarhouse has been churning out scrumptious homemade-quality cakes for nearly 25 years, and I hope it will continue its legacy of giving cake lovers like me a sugar-high for many, many more years.

Mad About Food
