About La Union

The famous surfing capital of the North is more than just about giving both new and experienced riders an amazing holiday so close to the city (although, yes, it is the nearest drive from the metro making it a top impromptu destination) – it’s steeped in its own wealth of history as well so there are plenty of places to visit and take photos of when you’re done with the beach.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan resides in the centuries-old church of St. Catherine de Luna. A sight to behold in and of itself, indigenous people claim that she appeared as an old woman before them offering food and inviting them to be baptized. It is said that many miracles have happened ever since she landed on Luna’s shores.

Take a gander at artifacts, archeological finds and more at the Museu de Iloko and Museo de La Union, where you’ll find an interesting mix of pre-Spanish period gems as well as pieces that contain cultural importance to the Ilocanos. The best part? The entrance is absolutely free.

Nature lovers should soak in the beauty of the La Union Botanical Garden. This 20-hectare scientific masterpiece is the first of its kind in the country featuring a Medicinal Garden, Sunken Garden, Japanese Garden and more.

And of course we can’t forget to mention the awesome surf – San Juan in La Union has beaches that are said to have some of the best waves in the region that go as high as ten feet. If diving is more your thing, they have the plentiful Fagg Reef for you to explore.
