When it comes to staycations, location is everything.
The Mall of Asia Complex is a sprawling 60 hectares of urban development, where shops, hotels, and restaurants line the Manila Bay for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike. Many prefer the area for its proximity to the airport and tourist attractions, even though looking for a hotel that’s both accessible and affordable can be difficult in the capital city. But after my weekend at TRYP by Wyndham, I can confidently tell you that your worries are over.
A good place
TRYP is conveniently located along the MoA Complex’s Seaside Boulevard, where good eats are always a five-minute walk away. The hotel’s interiors are sleek and contemporary—although Wyndham is a global brand, TRYP Manila is infused with Filipino touches, from the furnishings to the graphic art. It’s as cool and Instagram-worthy as a youth hostel, but with the comfort and class you would come to expect from a lifestyle brand hotel.
Attention to detail
The hotel takes advantage of its location by offering sunset-view rooms, so you can enjoy the picturesque Manila Bay sunset from the comfort of your bay window (the kind that juts out from the outside walls so you feel like you’re in a nook—comfy cushions included). And they have rooms for any guest’s unique needs: a loft-type room for those who want more space, a family room with bunk beds for groups on a budget, and even a fitness room complete with stationary bike for those who just can’t miss a workout.
When we stepped into our Cityscape Room, we were delighted to find two queen beds, an HD television, and a cushioned space to enjoy the fantastic view from the 15th floor. Facing the beds are all-purpose shelving; from right to left, you’ll find the coffee station, TV system, vanity-slash-workspace, and closet and storage areas. They’re seamlessly built in together to give the room both flair and function.
I absolutely loved the attention to detail, too: there were outlets fitted with USB ports so I could charge without the need for an adaptor. Instead of instant coffee sachets, each room has a coffee making facility (perfect for caffeine-dependent city dwellers) so you can enjoy a better cup of joe at any time of the day. And of course, the ultra-modern bathroom provided the perfect environment for a long and luxurious steam shower. TBH, the best part of this staycation was having eight pillows all to ourselves. After a tiring work week, we slept soundly.
Downstairs, you can find an airy, spacious restaurant, intimate meeting rooms, and even a library if you’re looking to do some work away from the temptation of your bed. Those are the little things young travelers look out for that many hotels seem to miss—and TRYP delivers so effortlessly.
Easy like Sunday morning
On our last day there (and after a delicious, filling buffet breakfast at Milagritos Restaurant), my boyfriend and I decided to check out the pool on the top floor. I was battling a cough so I couldn’t take a dip, but I was more than happy to sit back, enjoy the view, and watch the other guests frolic in the water. The vibe upstairs is an easygoing contrast to the rest of constantly-busy Manila, and if you can stay a while to catch the sunset, the remarkable view from that vantage point is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your short but sweet staycation.
My stay at TRYP may have been quick, but I definitely felt taken care of the whole way through. The hotel understands the ubiquity of an on-the-go lifestyle, so they made sure to cultivate the best possible resting spot for hustling travelers with full itineraries—whatever their personality or preferences.
Beyond a comfortable bed and a good, hot meal, TRYP turns your weekend staycation or quick Manila stopover into a laid-back and hassle-free experience that will leave you renewed and refueled, ready to fight another day and face the colorful, chaotic city once again.
