When it comes to travel, it’s usually the locals who are in the know.
Imagine the wonder when it’s actually tourists who are privy to the best-kept secret in the town of Ronda in southern Cebu. Such that up until a few years ago, if you asked anyone from this quaint municipality for directions to Les Maisons d’Itac, you’d be hard-pressed to find answers.
Situated near a fishing village on the outskirts of Ronda, this boutique beach resort is definitely considered off the beaten path.
Your trusty GPS or map will pinpoint you in the correct direction, but it’s so unassuming to the point that the property doesn’t even have a proper signage (yet). You’ll wonder if you’re even in the right place. Once you finally get to this hidden paradise, however, it weaves its charm and magic immediately—a feeling akin to finding that treasure after a long journey.
The sprawling property does not offer much fanfare, preferring to let the beauty of the place speak for itself. Right by the entrance of Les Maisons d’Itac are several low-level buildings—two storeys at most—constructed in contemporary fashion while giving off native vibes with thatched roofs and wooden floors. One serves as the default front desk, dining area, and recreation center; while adjacent to it is a duplex that houses the resort’s two studio units.
All accommodations in Les Maisons d’Itac are named after figures in Greek Mythology. The studio units are called Studio Poséidon and Studio Calypso. Both are identical airconditioned rooms that come with magnificent views of the sea.
These rooms are equipped with king-sized beds, private bathrooms, and their own terraces. Guests can utilize the common swimming pool that's located close to the sea.
Right next to this five-foot-deep pool is a traditional bamboo house. Called the Maison Ulysse, this two-storey accommodation—the only one of its kind throughout the property of Les Maisons d’Itac—provides guests with a king-sized bed and a private bathroom on the second floor, with a private dining room and lounging area downstairs.
The Maison Ulysse is open air and comes with a ceiling fan, although the bamboo ensures that it never gets warm inside. The coconut trees interspersed all over the resort also provide a lot of cool shade from the sun.
Of course, all these have amazing views of the sea, the shoreline of which is separated from Les Maisons d’Itac by a concrete seawall. While it’s not the ideal beachfront, the sand is fine and white. The waters are beautiful and clear, reflecting the sky’s dazzling blue. It’s definitely best to swim during the high-tide, but the low-tide reveals rocks and other corals worth exploring.
Les Maisons d’Itac continues up a slight elevation, where the resort’s two most exclusive villas are located. Suite Pénélope has two air-conditioned bedrooms, each with a king-sized bed, a bathroom, and separate toilets.
There is also a third bedroom intended for kids, which also has its own bathroom and two single beds. The rooms open up to a big terrace with an outdoor dining area and a private dipping pool. Suite Télémac is near identical, with the addition of a small nipa hut with a bed—perfect for lazing away the afternoons.
Although simple in its rustic and native charms, Les Maisons d'Itac has all the amenities of a luxury getaway. Its most prized luxury though lies in its privacy—all rooms in Les Maisons d’Itac are situated far enough from each other to feel like you have the entire place to yourself.
Even at its fullest occupancy, it never gets crowded, which certainly appeals to foreigners. It’s certainly a wonder why this place has remained one of Ronda’s best-kept secrets.
As for Itac? He’s the dog boss who owns the place.
