The Peacock Garden: Where History Comes to Life

by Angie Garcia

It's quite rare to come across a stay that embodies a distinct personality like The Peacock Garden.

The closest way to describe The Peacock Garden is a European affair with a sprinkle of Filipino charm. And just like any good memory, it has that uncanny ability to spark nostalgia shortly after you leave its quarters. No wonder guests go back to relive its immaculate charm.

This luxury boutique hotel is tucked away on a hilltop in Baclayon, and it’s inarguably one of the most captivating yet low-key destinations in Bohol.

While Baclayon is known as a historic town, this secluded haven has its own spin on history. On the outside, it's a dreamy setting decorated with well-manicured gardens, Roman sculptures, and European-style architecture that frame its scenic walkways.

Upon entering The Peacock Garden, you'll notice how quiet it is. There are no crowds to be found here, just couples enjoying their downtime here. It's the perfect antidote for travelers whose priority is relaxing within the compounds of the resort, rather than sightseeing.

Whether it’s sunbathing outside beside the gorgeous infinity pool or getting pampered with a Condé Nast-recognised spa treatment, this secluded haven gives you the time and space to luxuriate in peace—the troubles of the outside world are suddenly worlds away.

East-Meets-West History

The Peacock Garden will certainly delight the most discerning history lovers. An impressive hodgepodge of East and Western memorabilia greets you the moment you step inside the main entrance. There's another trinket or gem to admire in every turn.

It all comes from the personal collection of German owner Hans Schoof, who was the former commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal. Some of Jose Rizal's personal items can be found here, including a living room set that was once used by Rizal himself.

Instead of the slick aesthetics that holds an important characteristic for many luxury hotels, The Peacock Garden allows the antiques and valuables do the talking. If these memorabilia could talk, each one will have a very different story to tell.

The Peacock Garden's Rooms

Each of the 40 well-appointed rooms is furnished with dark antique-style fittings. A closer look and you'll see that its carvings are intricately Filipino.

The large windows of the Sea View Room strike a balance of warm lighting and natural light. It also comes with a pocket balcony, so you can take a front-row seat to the majestic views of the infinity pool, gardens, and the sparkling sea that rests behind it.

Your charming nook is decorated with luxe little details: unique fittings custom-crafted locally, a plush four-poster bed with soft-as-silk 320 thread-count sheets, and a marbled bathroom complete with pampering essentials from L’Occitane and velvety towels embossed with Peacock Garden's emblem.

Laya Restaurant

The East-meets-West theme carries over at Cafe Laya (formerly Old Heidelberg Restaurant). A signature touch is the wooden chairs acquired from 19th-century European estate.

For your meals, start with a basket of their varies homemade rolls served warm with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and decadent French butter Beurre d’Isigny—a personal favorite!

The gourmet pleasures offered are predominantly European, but there are a few Asian dishes (Thai Red Curry with Prawns, anyone?). Each dish is exquisitely prepared, but the menu standouts include the Wagyu Burger, Grilled Pork Medallion, and the Grilled Beef Fillet Steak cooked to your liking and served with your choice of red wine sauce or herb butter.

Their dessert selections will certainly not disappoint the sweet-toothed. For those on the adventurous side, their unusual range of homemade ice cream flavors will offer a different sensation to the palate. I recommend the Wheat Beer and Mango Chili Coriander, which left a spicy note that lingered quite nicely after each spoonful.

Not to worry though, there are other flavors you can't go wrong with. The Tropical Sorbet and Hazelnut come top of mind!

The wine cellar is home to an impressive wine collection, including vintage and new world wines from all around the globe. It is said to hold 1,500 bottles and counting while its oldest bottle is a rare vintage from 1825!

The members-only Hemingway Cigar Lounge is where guests can enjoy their cigars with their preferred libations and leather club chairs. There are over 4,000 variations of cigars from all around the world! It’s beautifully decked in wooden walls with black-and-white photos of famous cigar lovers such as Ernest Hemingway, Fidel Castro, Sigmund Freud, and Al Capone.

Fontana Aurelia Spa

A trip to The Peacock Garden won't be complete without trying a spa treatment in Fontana Aurelia Spa, a world-class spa that was once featured in Conde Nast's Luxury Spas Guide Book (2012). Translated as "Golden Fountain", this Roman-inspired sanctuary is beautifully framed by Grecian pillars, antique murals, and high ceilings that will cocoon its guests with utmost luxury the moment they enter.

The Peacock Garden may not have the advantage of being close to Bohol's famous beaches, but its historic grandeur and exclusivity will certainly make up for it. While it's hidden from the crowds, its quiet lure will lull the weariest of travelers.

The combination of the relaxed pace of life and the peaceful, picturesque views is like stepping back into a different world. And pretty soon, you'll want to relive it again and again.
