The Bucket List Series: 10 Things to Do in Bohol

by Charlene Co
February 9, 2018

If it's adventure, history, rare encounters, or relaxation you're looking for, Bohol certainly has a place for it.

Here are the top 10 things to include in your itinerary when you visit this diverse island!

Balicasag Island

1. Go Island Hopping

Bohol is home to plenty of beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue waters. One of the best ways to experience it is to venture out to sea. Discover the distinct charm of Panglao’s neighboring islands!

Sink your toes in the powder-fine shores of Pamilacan Island and witness whales and dolphins along the way. Walk along the white sandbar stretch in Virgin Island, dine on some freshly grilled lobster tail prepared by local fishermen, or have a picnic on Balicasag Island.

2. Snorkel or Scuba Dive

Bohol's surrounding islands are known to be one of the best diving spots in the world for its diverse marine life sanctuary.

The sardine run phenomenon is definitely a must-see! In fact, Bohol is one out of only three destinations in where you can experience it up close. Its spectacular underwater world will also allow you to swim with friendly sea turtles and schools of jackfish.

3. Stand Above a Sea of Clouds

Mt. Pulag and Sagada are not the only two destinations in the Philippines where you can stand above a sea of clouds. See this natural wonder at up-and-coming hotspot Danao too!

And best of all, you don’t have to hike for days to get there; all it takes is a motorcycle ride, a short hike up, and lo and behold! You’ll be closer to the sky than the clouds itself. It comes with a major bonus with the site of the rice terraces on the other side of the mountain.

4. Dine on Fresh Seafood & Local Eats

An island surrounded by an ocean teeming with marine life means bountiful fresh seafood to gorge on! Have your fill of fresh seafood like shrimps, crabs, lobster tail, and fish served in boodle-style or pick your own fresh catch of the day at one of the restaurants that are lined along Alona Beach.

If you’re feeling adventurous, savor fresh sea urchin! Or, sample their own version of chicharon called chichaworms, organic deep-fried worms.

5. Meet One of the World’s Smallest Primates

Indigenous to Bohol is one of the world’s smallest primate: the Tarsier. These endangered species grow no more than 5-inches. They are usually found in the rainforests of only three Southeast Asian countries (the Philippines included). You can witness them in their natural habitat at The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary in Corella.

6. Do a Firefly Watching Expedition on the Abatan River

Kayak past local villages and through a tunnel of mangrove trees for a spectacular natural light show. Unlike many of Bohol’s tours, the firefly watching tour offers a unique and peaceful experience as you watch the sun disappear into the river and the trees light up with fireflies and the sound of nature serenading you.

7. Enjoy a Lazy Afternoon on a Powder-Fine White Sand Beach

On days you want to just sit back, relax and spend a quiet afternoon under the sun, head to some of its popular white-sand beaches like Dumaluan, Bagobo, Dauis, or Anda. For a more lively scene, visit the vibrant Alona Beach and enjoy happy hour during sunset at one of the numerous establishments along the beach.

8. ATV through one of the World’s Natural Wonders

Bohol is synonymous with its famous Chocolate Hills. These brown Hershey Kisses-like hills scattered through a large forest still holds the title of being one of the best natural wonders of the world.

For the best views, maneuver through a rough terrain on a guided ATV tour to get as close as you can to these unique natural formations.

Mag-aso Falls

9. Chasing Waterfalls

Satisfy your itch for adventure as you visit waterfalls like Mag-Aso Falls, Hangtud Twin Falls or Dimiao Twin Falls. Discover breathtaking sites of rice terraces along the way to Can-umantad Falls in Candijay and Panga Falls in Bilar. The path going there is never easy, but finding them makes it all worth the trip. Many of those who have visited will attest that it’s one of the best experiences in Bohol.

10. Challenge Your Fitness With SUP Yoga

Doing SUP Yoga on the Loboc River definitely makes the popular river cruise look like a thing of the past. Practice your favorite sun salutations on a paddleboard with the help of an experienced yoga instructor. It's certainly a new workout experience you won't find anywhere else!
