9 Cool Alternatives to the Usual Dinner-and-Movie Date

When it comes to dates, dinner and a movie is a tried-and-tested choice.

But sometimes, tried-and-tested just won't cut it when you're craving a bit of excitement. If you're looking for unconventional ways to spend the night with your significant other, here are some unexpected date ideas worth trying out.

1. Go on a sunset cruise.

The boulevard fronting Manila Bay is one of the best sunset viewing spots in the city. Up the ante by boarding the bay's famed sunset cruise, and watch the sun go down together as the ferry buoys over tangerine-tinged waters.

Nothing spells romance better than the perfect poem. Bring your beau to a poetry reading for a night of rhyme, rhythm, and verse. Better yet, muster up the courage to go onstage and read out the poem you wrote declaring your love! Catch a show by Filipino spoken word collective Words Anonymous, or experience an open mic night at literary hubs like Warrior Poet Art Cafe in Cubao or Conspiracy Garden Cafe in Quezon City.

5. Head to Tagaytay on a motorcycle.

You've probably already gone on a Tagaytay date by car, but have you ever tried doing so on a motorcycle? The cool breeze whipping against your hair and the expanse of road stretching out ahead of you make for a fun, exhilarating experience. 6. Take a hike—literally.

A hike can be the perfect antidote to a stressful week in the city. It also helps strengthen a couple's teamwork and resolve—there's nothing quite like tackling a mountain together and finally reaching the summit for an unmatched view of the scenery below. Make it even more romantic with a picnic at the summit or campsite.

7. See centuries-old churches.

Part of the longstanding remnants of Spanish rule in the capital are various centuries-old Catholic churches. In Intramuros alone, you'll find two 15th -century churches: Neo-Romanesque Manila Cathedral, and San Agustin Church, a baroque church that will soon be named a UNESCO Heritage Site. Malate Church is located nearby, as well as St. Pancratius Chapel, which was built in the middle of stunning Paco Park, a favorite wedding venue for many Filipinos.

8. Do a heritage tour of Santa Ana district.

Take your loved one to Santa Ana in Manila to explore heritage and cultural gems. Among them is the Santa Ana Church, whose Camarin dela Virgen is a National Cultural Treasure. Included in the collection of the Church's most prized antiquities are an 11th century AD porcelain bowl, a pre-Spanish era burial site, and floor tiles from the Ming Dynasty.

Surrounding the Church are 19 historic houses, including the 80-year-old Santos House and the Lichauco House, declared by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts as a heritage house. A walking tour that covers the entire heritage district can be done via the Santa Ana Heritage Tourism Association.

9. Drink fine wine.
