6 Local Eco-Resorts Perfect for Those on a Plant-Based Diet

by Marla Miniano-Umali
March 3, 2020

Having been conditioned to associate travel with hedonistic pleasures, we usually don’t make an effort to eat right when we go on a trip. Even after we’ve successfully integrated working out and making better food choices into our daily routines, our commitment to health seems to take a backseat once we switch to vacation mode. But while it’s great to indulge occasionally and enjoy the moment, imagine how refreshing and satisfying it would be if a getaway gave us time to unwind as well as a chance to fuel our bodies with delicious, nutritious, feel-good food.

It’s a different story for vegans and vegetarians: even if they want to keep consuming clean meals or practice sustainable dining on vacation, their options are few and far between, especially in a country whose defining dishes are commonly meat-based. The silver lining is that awareness surrounding plant-based diets is slowly growing, permeating the way we eat, shop, and even travel. Below, we’ve collected seven destinations that reflect this shift in perspective, proving that taking care of ourselves and the world we live in are more than just passing trends.

FOR VEGANS

Kwentong Dagat

Gone are the days when going vegan meant depriving yourself of hearty dishes that taste like home. At this quaint Zambales beach resort with rustic A-frame cottages flanked by agoho trees, you can have your fill of vegan versions of Filipino favorites such as Bicol Express and “fish” tausi (salted black beans). Even their tortang talong is proudly vegan, using chickpea flour as a substitute for eggs. Veganism often feels like an exclusive club that’s difficult to crack, but Kwentong Dagat extends an effortlessly warm welcome to those who are simply curious about making the switch, making it an enjoyable, judgment-free experience for all.

Believing that good food decreases the risks of chronic illnesses and equips the mind, body, and spirit to combat daily aggressors, The Farm at San Benito’s Alive! Vegan Restaurant boasts a robust menu of organic vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds sourced from within their grounds. With their elegantly prepared, nutrient-dense cuisine (we recommend the Coconut Pad Thai and Pomelo Salad in Crispy Spring Roll Basket), eating becomes a truly healing and life-giving act.
