5 Resorts in La Union Where Anyone Can Learn How to Surf

by Roxie Ramirez

Getting to La Union has never been easier. Not only can you hop on a bus from Pasay or Cubao, but driving from Manila to the province now also takes as little as four hours, thanks to a newly opened expressway.

That also means learning how to surf has also never been easier. It’s best to go to the Surfing Capital of the North between the months of October to April, better known as the north swell season. That’s when the amihan waves bring in consistent waves to the shore. There are also strong waves between the months of July to September, although weather conditions are usually a bit stormier.

Although you only really need to pay a visit to the beach in order to learn how to surf, we’ve rounded up a list of five resorts where you can not only ride the waves but also have a place to cool down after a long day of surf lessons.

1. San Juan Surf Resort

Located just a few steps away from Urbiztondo Beach, San Juan Surf Resort houses one of the best surf schools in the country: San Juan Surf School. It was founded by Filipino-Australian surfer Luke Landrigan, one of the very first Filipinos to a gain a Bronze Medallion for Surf Rescue in Australia.

All of San Juan Surf School’s surfing modules are internationally accredited, meaning you can not only surf in the Philippines, but all around the world as well. Surfing lessons start at ₱400 per hour, complete with a board and an instructor.

If you’re thinking of heading to La Union solo, you may want to consider staying at the Circle Hostel. With its tagline, ‘There are no strangers,’ this eco-friendly resort places importance on the sense of community. There’s a wide array of common spaces, where guests can create art and play music.

That quality even extends to its surfing lessons. The Circle Hostel has partnered up with members of the local community, providing surf lessons that are not only safe and comprehensive, but personal as well. Who knows, you just might end up leaving with a lifelong friend! Lessons here start at ₱400 per hour, including a board and an instructor.

Including a superlative like ‘awesome’ in their name might seem self-serving, but rest assured Awesome Hotel does live up to the adjective. This four-star resort located in the surfing town of San Juan offers luxury accommodations, with its spacious rooms and first class restaurant, at a fairly affordable price.

They also offer free pick-up and drop-off services from San Fernando, if you’re hoping to save even more money by taking public transport from Manila. Its surfing lessons are pretty awesome too, with lessons starting at ₱400 per hour, complete with a board and instructor.
